Bennett Miller Explores the Alliance Between AI and Film Photography at the Gagosian Gallery

From January 15th to February 22nd, 2025, Academy Award-nominated director Bennett Miller is presenting a new solo show at the Parisian headquarters of the Gagosian Gallery. Blending generative artificial intelligence systems and film photography, the exhibition ‘Bennett Miller’ marks a new chapter in the career of the American filmmaker, best known for directing films like Truman Capote and Foxcatcher. These pigment and gelatin prints are rendered from artificially generated imagery, an unconventional combination of age-old and cutting-edge techniques that speaks for Bennett Miller’s boundless creativity. To grant this special vintage feel to his portraits, the artist used the AI software DALL-E to play on blur, selective focus and texture, to obtain an effect reminiscent of early photography. Exhibiting these new pieces at a prestigious institution like Galerie Gagosian, Bennett Miller is marking a significant step towards the integration of AI into the contemporary art scene.

At the opening evening, we ran into Cédric Charbit, Bianca Brandolini, Michele Lamy, Hervé Van der Straeten, Karlie Kloss, Derek Blasberg, Gaspar Noé and Bruno Frisoni, all mesmerised by the haunting and mysterious allure of these artworks.
