The Institut Culturel du Mexique in Paris Welcomes Hugo Toro and His Work on Memory

Institut Culturel du Mexique, Paris

Franco-Mexican artist Hugo Toro is taking over the Institut Culturel du Mexique in Paris with his first exhibition, “Aguas que murmuran” (rumbles of water). Drawing inspiration from his Mexican origins and his dual identity, the artist introduces an exploration of memory. His work questions our relationship with our memories and the way they shape our perception of the world. Having never lived in the country, he presents a poetic and fantastical vision of Mexico inspired by his mother. Made of earthy and ochre tones, his large-format canvases are bound together by a common theme: water.

An essential feature of Toro’s singular style, water is delicate, destructive and filled with memories. The artist introduces the idea that, just like a river carves out the bottom of a valley, we are shaped by our memories. At the opening of this oneiric exhibition, we met Hugo Marchand, Pierre Frey, Mélanie Huynh and Jenna Courtin, among others.
