“Watch you burn”: A Dystopian Staging by Mathias Kiss
Through his installations, sculptures and paintings, Mathias Kiss blends skills and mediums, creating an avant-garde approach to art which blurs the boundaries between art and craftsmanship. Inspired by art movements such as Arts & Crafts and Bauhaus, he breaks free of norms and gives free rein to his creativity in his “Atelier-Maison”, a place halfway between a studio and an artist’s home. With his latest exhibition, “Watch you burn”, he presents an intriguing apocalyptic tale.
Displayed in an anxiety-inducing setting, in a white room reminiscent of a bleak fallout shelter, Mathias Kiss’s exhibition depicts our society’s beauty ideals in a dystopian way. Supported by an original composition by musician Nicolas Godin, the show features a mix of the artist’s iconic pieces with others specially crafted for the occasion. It also includes Mathias Kiss’ signature element, crumpled mirrors, which he combines with other works such as The Sun, from his installation I Have a Dream. From the giant QR Code (the artist’s old vaccination certificate) to flags with cube-shaped motifs, the exhibition evokes the pixelated life we’re living, with the idea that our beauty ideals are overly influenced by social media and technology. The artist’s fascinating yet terrifying scenography reflects the excesses of a civilization that is gradually losing its soul.
At the exhibition opening, we met Valérie Lemercier, Vincent Darré, David Herman, Diane Pernet and many others.
