Mercedes Benz 300 SL x Sotheby’s: Love is in the Trait

It is undeniably one of the most beautiful traits in automobilist History. Form follows function at its best. Designed to cut through the air, the 300 SL owes its name to its doors’ mechanism, evoking the movement of a gull stretching its wings. Throughout its 3-year production run, Mercedes produced 1400 Gullwing, which makes this model quite an unusual car. Yet, out of these 1400, only 29 had aluminium bodywork, a feature making them stand out from other classical cars. This light-alloy body was finished with plexiglass windows and D-pillars, saving 20 kg in weight. Another distinctive element is its six 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder, which combined with a racing camshaft, higher compression, bespoke throttle and a recalibrated fuel system, allows it to reach over 215 bhp. Rudge wheels were fitted as standard, optional on steel-bodied Gullwing models, as were ventilated front drums. Thoroughly documented and numbered, the car will be auctioned on March 13th. We don’t even dare imagine the figure… but we can be sure that it will be as grand as this blue-grey marvel.
