Reflections of the Century: The Musée d’Orsay Presents Peter Doig’s Enigmatic Universe
The Musée d’Orsay is welcoming a new and captivating exhibition devoted to the work of contemporary artist Peter Doig. Entitled “Reflections of the Century”, this exhibition plunges visitors into the painter’s rich and enigmatic universe, which transcends the boundaries of figurative painting.
The exhibition plunges us right into the artist’s interiority by seizing the way he interweaves his personal memories and encounters, tinged with notes of melancholy, to create highly personal artworks. The dome’s emblematic architecture is now home to Doig’s monumental canvases, all produced over the past twenty years in the Caribbean island of Trinidad. These works offer a visual journey through the artist’s emotions and reflections, evoking an intimate life period. In the adjoining rooms, the artist’s choices are expressed through a selection of works from the Musée d’Orsay, creating a fascinating visual dialogue between his creations and those of the grand masters, also very dear to him. Through these juxtapositions, the artist explores our relationship with time, by evoking the past to bring out feelings, ultimately blurring temporal boundaries.
By blending the contemporary with the classical, Reflections of the Century offers an immersive artistic experience that allows viewers to immerse themselves in the artist’s reflective spirit. It is a visual exploration that transcends eras, celebrating the power of art as a timeless reflection of humanity.
The exhibition opening was held on Sunday 15, a highly successful evening that gathered artists and art enthusiasts like Hans Ulrich Obrist, Emma Lavigne, Maja Hoffman, Chris Dercon, Mickalene Thomas, the duo Elmgreen & Dragset, Jerome Sans, Nathalie Obadia, Alain Flammarion and many others.
