The Marmottan Monet Museum invites Keith Tyson

To celebrate its 85th birthday, the Marmottan Monet Museum launched “Unexpected Dialogues”, a bi-annual exhibition program inviting contemporary artists to react in their unique way to the permanent works in the museum’s collection. After Gérard Fromanger last March, Keith Tyson is the museum’s latest guest artist whose work is displayed in “Tyson / Monet: A Question of Painting”, under the artistic direction of exhibition curator Ariane Koek and invited by Marianne Mathieu, Scientific Director of the Marmottan Monet Museum. The British artist, winner of the Turner Prize, is known for questioning reality through his paintings, sculptures and installations made from various materials – painting, clay, resin metal… Among his emblematic works is The Art Machine, an algorithm he created in the 1990s to generate work proposals in a random manner. In 2008,  paint itself became the co-artist with Nature Painting. Like Monet, Tyson has always questioned the conventions and limits of painting and also challenge our knowledge of reality itself. His journey has led him to explore two particular works in the exhibition: Le Pont de l’Europe, la gare Saint-Lazare 1877, an image of a Paris in the era of the steam engine and Bras de Seine près de Giverny, soleil levant 1897, a romantic landscape of a tree near a river… The exhibition is on through March 1st, 2020.
