Christian Berst introduces James Edward Deeds’ melancholic work.
French painter Jean Dubuffet invented the concept of art brut in 1945 to qualify artworks “made outside of the academic tradition of the fine arts” (Tate Modern). Hence, the galerie christian berst art brut launched two new exhibitions. One introduces the work of American artist James Edward Deeds. Committed to a psychiatric hospital by his authoritarian father at 17; the artist spent his entire life locked up. A disturbing and melancholic work of 140 recto-verso pencil drawings where Deeds depicts the sufferings experienced in asylum. The second, called endless nameless is a dialogue between contemporary art and art brut orchestrated by Leo Guy-Denarcy.
Guests included Jean de Loisy, Sophie Calle, Camille Morineau, Léo Guy Denarcy and Christian Berst himself.
