Carla Fernández Knits a Handmade Future at la Galerie du 19M

From September 16 to December 17, la Galerie du 19M presents the exhibition “Carla Fernández. L’avenir fait main” (Carla Fernández. The Future is Handmade). The show offers an immersive exploration of the world of the stylist and designer through her collaborations with Mexican artisans, whose artistry and know-how she celebrates.

Creator, designer, and founder of her eponymous brand, Carla Fernández works at the forefront of ethical fashion, documenting and preserving the rich textile heritage of the indigenous communities of her home country, Mexico. Her creations are the product of a close collaboration with her partner Cristina Rangel and nearly 180 weavers, embroiderers and woodcarvers. By using traditional techniques, Carla Fernández Casa de Moda creates contemporary fashion that resonates with her homeland and its heritage, thus presenting a universal scope comprising creation, crafts, and visual arts.

The exhibition, first presented in Denver and then in Mexico City, is curated by Florence Müller and designed by Pedro Reyes and has been expanded to include pieces specifically conceived for the occasion. Fruitful collaborations between the designer, her partner craftsmen in Mexico and four residents at Maisons of le 19M – Goossens, Massaro, Maison Michel and ERES – bring together traditional and contemporary know-how and techniques.

The Galerie du 19M, an open cultural space operating since January 2022, is devoted to preserving and disseminating values linked to the arts and crafts. Through exhibitions, workshops and conferences, its multidisciplinary programme is designed for a community of local players. It resonates with those interested in handicraft professions, both young generations and the general public, embracing values that are both societal and community-based.
