Gagosian Pays Tribute to Richard Avedon

More than just a good eye, Richard Avedon is a legend. To celebrate the centenary of his birth, the Gagosian Gallery is presenting a retrospective of the photographer’s work featuring an exceptional collection. “Iconic Avedon” conveys the deep bond between Avedon and the city of Paris, which was one of his first fields of experimentation. The exhibition was officially launched in the heart of the French capital during Haute Couture Week 2024 and was sponsored by Maison Dior. While he is best known for his celebrity portraits, the show reveals a part of his work focused on subjects far from the limelight, which he transformed into icons, such as his 1963 photo of William Casby, one of the last people alive born into slavery. Ultimately, the aim is to show a series of photographs with a stronger political commitment than the ones we are used to seeing. It’s a cultural and political initiative well worth a visit. At the opening, we met Larry Gagosian, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Warren Ellis, Kelly Phoenix, Elie Top, India Mahdavi, Peter Dundas, Derek Blasberg and Natalia Vodianova.
