Michael Jackson beyond music at Grand Palais

“I would like to be remembered as a person who came and brought light to the world”. Even before his untimely death more than ten years ago, Michael Jackson was already a myth. A gifted singer, a prodigious dancer, a philanthropist and a style icon… The King of Pop is an inspiration far beyond music, and his cultural heritage is immense. After the National Portrait Gallery in London, Paris’ Grand Palais presents “Michael Jackson: On the Wall”. The exhibition explores the cultural impact of the artist’s personality and work in contemporary art since the 1980s. A social phenomenon, especially in terms of identity, race and the experience of celebrity, Michael Jackson is also one of the most represented figures in visual arts. The exhibition, curated by Nicholas Cullinan (Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London) and Vanessa Desclaux, brings together the works of forty artists and presents a series of pieces created for the occasion. The works of David LaChapelle, Grayson Perry, Andy Warhol, Rita Ackermann and Mark Flood all create a chronological journey retracing the career of Michael Jackson, from young prodigy to world legend. Painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and performance: this is the ultimate tribute to the many talents of the King of Pop – and to the artists he inspired.
