Margiela curates its own retrospective at Palais Galliera

This is definitely the exhibition not to miss as Paris Fashion Week is in full swing. Closed until March rd3, the Palais Galliera inaugurated yesterday its exhibition devoted to the most mysterious (and de facto most mythical) designer of his generation: Martin Margiela. The designer, whose true identity remains a mystery to many, is the center of the “Margiela/Galliera” exhibition. Moreover, it must be noticed that Margiela himself took over the exhibition’s artistic direction. Needless to say, the confidential spaces of the Musée de la mode de la ville de Paris were invaded by personalities who, one way or another, have followed the designer’s path (the exhibition focuses on the 1989-2009 timeframe). Like Jean Paul Gaultier, who gave a young Margiela one of his first job opportunities in fashion, or Raf Simons, whose aesthetics were surely influenced by the one who founded the legendary Antwerp Six. The exhibition, curated by Alexandre Samson, brings together nearly 130 silhouettes among objects, films and installations. It undoubtedly delivers the most relevant look at Martin Margiela’s creative vision as the “Margiela season” opens in Paris with the forthcoming exhibition “Margiela, les années Hermès” at MAD Paris. We take a look back at the opening. Video: Chantapitch Wiwatchaikamol
