The Works of Deborah Roberts and Niki de Saint Phalle Exhibited at Galerie Mitterrand

Galerie Mitterrand presents “Deborah Roberts and Niki de Saint Phalle: The Conversation Continues”, which will be running from May 26 to July 22. Co-organised with Gardy St Fleur, this is the very first exhibition by American artist Deborah Roberts in France. Her latest series of painting-collages, entitled “Negro Period: The Conversation Continues”, is set in dialogue with sculptures and works on paper by Niki de Saint Phalle. Deborah Roberts’ new series, Période Nègre: The Conversation Continues is a direct reference to Picasso’s Negro Period, during which the artist drew inspiration from African art to develop  his painting style, which ultimately led him to invent Cubism. The challenge for Deborah Roberts in this exhibition is to continue this conversation fifty years after his death through an exploration of the motifs, textures and history of the African peoples who inspired Picasso. During a private preview at the gallery, we met Daniel Newman, Marie-Ann Yemsi, Cathia Lawson-Hall, Olivia Anani, Sharon Walters, Gardy St Fleur, and Bloum Cardenas.
