On the occasion of Fiac 2015, the Studio des Acacias by Mazarine, at the initiative of Paul-Emmanuel Reiffers, invites two of the most talented representatives of contemporary American art: Matthew Day Jackson and Rashid Johnson. An exhibition designed and produced in collaboration with Hauser & Wirth Gallery.
The two artists, who invest the Studio des Acacias with unpublished works, have in common a certain vision of the American dream, an America often criticized, synonymous with imperialism and hegemony, between racial struggles and World War II.
For this first solo exhibition in Paris, Jackson and Johnson create works in which a multiplicity of non-traditional supports and materials (synthetic grass, plasterboard, black soap, burnt wood…) intersect, reflecting their common inclination to probe history, in its global dimension as much as in its cultural or autobiographical aspects.
In connection with the exhibition, Rashid Johnson announces an exceptional performance against the Petit Palais for the opening of FIAC 2015. Shea wall”, a reinvention of Allan Kaprow’s”Sweet wall” (Berlin, 1970), on the esplanade of the Petit Palais on Wednesday 21 October.
