“Seizing the Invisible”: Alberto Giacometti as seen by Peter Lindbergh
After giving carte blanche to French artist Annette Messager, the Giacometti Institute invited German photographer Peter Lindbergh to invest the space. The exhibition “Seizing the Invisible” creates a dialogue between two creative entities and two generations that come together as one. The artists, through sculpture and photography respectively, are united in their quest for reality: often imperceptible, sometimes invisible. Yet reality is present in the striking authenticity of Lindbergh’s models, as well as in the meticulous details of Giacometti’s sculptures. To create this synergy, the Giacometti Foundation invited Peter Lindbergh to look through its archives and photograph the master’s works; through Lindbergh’s lens, Giacometti’s sculptural portraits come to life. The exhibition presents eyes as a focal point in both of the artists’ work. On opening day, Peter Lindbergh and exhibition curator Serena Bucalo-Mussely were surrounded by some of biggest names in the art industry: Paolo Roversi, Christian Boltanski, Annette Messager, as well as creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier. Lindbergh’s photographs are on view at the Giacometti Institute until March 24th. www.fondation-giacometti.fr
