Oscar Wilde’s Masterpiece, De Profundis, Reinterpreted by a Series of Artists Under the Direction of Daniel Malarkey

By 1897, after having served 2 years of hard labour for his homosexuality, Oscar Wilde had lost it all: family, relationships, family… However, he still attracted a great deal of “fame”, for what he wrote: “Between the famous and the infamous there is but one step, if as much as one”. These powerful words were part of De Profundis, a moving letter that he wrote in a letter during his imprisonment at Reading Gaol, considered as a confession, as he retraces his relationships. On the occasion of Paris + Art Basel, curator Daniel Malarkey has summoned several artists to deliver their interpretation of this major work. Furthermore, the exhibition is held at a hotel in Saint-Germain-des-près, the very place where the writer breathed his last. At the exhibition opening, we met Maggi Hambling, Kenneth Bergfeld, Eleanor Lakelin, Anna Calleja, Tancredi di Carcaci and Katerina Jebb.
