Palazzo Strozzi, Anselm Kiefer Explores the Depths of the Human Soul
The art of Anselm Kiefer bursts into the heart of Florence, transforming Palazzo Strozzi into a temple of contemplation and introspection. Thanks to the exhibition “Fallen Angels” on display from March 22 until July 21. Curated by Arturo Galansino, it is a true exploration into the depths of the human soul and history itself, punctuated by paintings, sculptures, installations, and photographs. The German artist, one of the greatest of our time, guides us through a labyrinth of allegories, figures, and forms, immersing us in the depths of memory and philosophical thought. The spectacular exhibition, in addition to historical projects, also offers the opportunity to admire brand new productions, including “Engelssturz” (Fall of the Angel), a monumental work conceived specifically for the Renaissance courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi. Kiefer, who now lives and works in France, on the outskirts of Paris, was among the first to emphasize the need to reflect on the history of World War II, delving into the emotional legacy of the German nation and embracing elements such as myth, religion, and mysticism (have you ever seen the mega permanent installation The Seven Heavenly Palaces at Hangar Bicocca in Milan?). The recent Florence opening involved the crème de la crème of international culture. Curators, gallery owners, artists, collectors: the list of guests who moved within the spaces commissioned at the end of the 15th century by the Florentine merchant Filippo Strozzi was rather extensive. In addition to Galansino, director general of the Palazzo Strozzi foundation, those who did not want to miss one of the most anticipated events of the season also included Maria Manetti Shrem, Lia Rumma, Amanda Platek, Massimiliano Fuksas, Mario Cristiani, Jeff e Emilie Goldblum, Edoardo Ferragamo, Antonio Riva, Cristina Fogazzaro, Tommaso Sacchi, Laura Leonardelli and Tommaso Calabro.
