Julie Mehretu x BMW: A Work of Art at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Artist Julie Mehretu embarks on a new creative journey through a collaboration with BMW, transforming a race car into a three-dimensional canvas for her distinctive two-dimensional style. The BMW M Hybrid V8, presented at the Centre Pompidou, will be showcased at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Cernobbio from May 24 to 26 and, most notably, will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 15 and 16, 2024.

“At first, I said no,” Mehretu admits. “I didn’t know how to approach working with a car. But after attending the Daytona race last year, everything changed, and the idea slowly took shape. I was inspired by a painting in my studio that I had just finished. So, I imagined the car moving through the canvas.”

This interaction with various surfaces has opened new perspectives for Mehretu, allowing her to blend the dynamism of speed with the static nature of visual art, creating a piece of art in motion. Julie Mehretu’s project is not just a celebration of art and technology but also an invitation to see the world with new eyes, where every curve and line tells a story of innovation and creativity (Photo credits: Andreas Hempel and André Josselin).
