Christian Marclay Returns to Paris with a Solo Show at the Centre Pompidou
Somewhere between a visual artist and a musician; that is how Christian Marclay defines himself. Born in California and raised in Geneva, the artist is known for a singular and hybrid exploration of sounds, a specific artistic practice that he has been expanding since the seventies. Inspired by punk and pop culture, Marclay uses sounds produced by objects or turntables to later create new acoustic, visual or physical works. His practice can hardly be limited to an enclosed category, and he is therefore, usually referred to as a multimedia artist. While sounds are at the core of his artistic explorations, so are the principles of collage, which he tries to transcribe no matter the medium used. Photographs, paintings, prints or even videos are all potential mediums for the artist to work with. Throughout his career, Marclay has collaborated with many musicians, created and sampled scratching sounds, and produced crossbred sculptures.
Invited by curator Jean-Pierre Criqui, Christian Marclay decided to exhibits some of his most famous installations, including Surround Sounds (2014-2015), Subtitled (2019) and All Together (2018) made with sampled snapchats. This exhibition also introduces a brand new polymorphic video installation called Doors (2022).
