Triumph x Baak: Desert, Anyone?

A desert lover? You are not the only one. At a time when global warming is a hot topic, mobility inspired by the great dunes is on the rise. Last month Porsche unveiled the 992 Safari, a tribute to the legendary 911 that won the Paris Dakar in the 80s. On the motorcycle side, Yamaha is offering a new version of its Ténéré and Honda of the Africa Twin – both of them drawing inspiration from the desert of the 80s. As far as Triumph is concerned, however, its all-terrain model, the Scramble, surprisingly lacks references. In order to fill this void, the French creative motorcycles and parts workshop BAAK decided to come up with a rather subtle one. For in its singular, almost artisanal and cubic allure lies an essential reference to what manufacturers did at the time: they would weld pieces of sheet metal to enlarge a tank so the engine was protected from stones, or add an extra headlight to make the saddle more comfortable during long stages. Back then, manufacturers did not design specific models. Instead, they started with a civilian version and then made adjustments to make it suitable for racing. It was only when the successes became established over time that they actually developed a final motorbike model.
