Rolex Deep Sea Special x Phillips Auctions : 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Jules Verne would have loved this watch. At the beginning of the 1960s, Rolex, which had built a solid reputation in the field of waterproofing, was looking to push the limits further. The goal was to go under 10,000 meters deep. At the time, a team tackled this infernal descent by diving into the Marianas Trench in a bathyscaphe, called the Trieste. Solidly attached to the submarine’s hull, one of the 35 Rolex Deep Sea Special watches had resisted the immeasurable pressure exerted by the 10,916 meters dive. It was record-breaking at the time. Only 5 of these prototypes were eventually sold. One of them (the N°35) has just resurfaced and will be offered at auction by Phillips, which now trusts the most exceptional models. There’s probably a record in sight for this watch forged by history and which is at the root of what Rolex is all about today.
