While every car is equipped with an airbag today, it’s only because a Mercedes engineer had the brilliant idea to use air to protect us against impacts 50 years ago. After making millions of models, kilometers of technical fabric used for making airbags were supposed to be thrown away. In a move towards upcycling, Mercedes called on designer Heron Preston (who is also a DJ and artistic director) to design a clothing line made from this particularly resistant fabric. The result is twice as successful: not only are the clothes made from recycled materials, but some of the collection’s pieces have kept the protective quality of the initial airbag. Yes, they can even inflate ! The collection will launch exclusively online on the GOAT platform on September 10.
