The Aga Khan, the Shah of Persia, Gianni Agnelli… the Maserati 5000GT was kind of THE star car of the 60s. Equipped with a highly powerful engine that had been taken straight from the racetrack, this luxury coupe was one of Ferrari’s great contenders at the time. Larger, yet discreet and sophisticated, the 5000GT is perhaps less well known than the fierce Lamborghinis and Jaguars, but also much more expensive. Transformed under special request by transalpine coachbuilders, its uniqueness is reserved for a few fortunate. The ultimate fantasy? Its astonishing backrest tilting system, which facilitates access to the rear seats. Clever yet unreliable, the model was abandoned due to serious problems when strong braking. The 5000 GT will be dispersed by Bonhams in early March.
