HEM Museum X Tadao Ando: archi-texture

There are many ways to cause a sensation. One of the most elegant ways, however, might just be to build a museum to show one’s own art collection. Then get on board one of the greatest architects in modern history, and you might just land on the Moon next. This is precisely what the HE family did when they asked Tadao Ando to do this project. This Chinese dynasty, one of the world’s largest appliance makers and China’s 6th biggest fortune, commissioned the Japanese star architect to design this incredible circular building in the province of Guangdong, the family’s home base. Tadao Ando, who became an architecte after abandoning a career as a professional boxer, has since become a champion of Brutalist architecture. Raw concrete, unprecedented geometrical shapes and proportions, and zenithal light are here part of Ando’s masterful language. For a few days now, the public got to discover this newly-opened masterpiece and obvious marvel of ‘archi-texture’.
