Hauser & Wirth x Menorca: The Possibility of an Island

Hauser & Wirt reveals its latest location. The art gallery has found its new home in Illa del Rei, Menorca, in a former navy hospital dating from the seventeenth century. The interior has been renovated by Argentinian architect Luis Laplace, and its surrounding gardens by Dutch designer Piet Oudolf. In order to reach the island, one must take a 15-minute ferry from Menorca’s capital, Mahón. Once there, visitors are greeted by a sculpture garden featuring works by Paul McCarthy, Hans Josephsohn, Stefan Brüggemann and Eduardo Chillida. To celebrate the opening of its new location, Hauser & Wirth has organized a group show entitled “After the Mediterranean”. The exhibition is curated by writer and researcher Oriol Fontdevila and brings together the works of local artists like Adjoa Armah, archaeologist Irene Riudavets and geologist Lorena Rasero, whose works aim at answering social and ecological questions affecting the island, thus tackling subjects ranging from climatic urgency to postcolonial heritage.
