Casa Canicada X Carvalho Araujo : Minimal footprint

Jose Manuel Castro Carvalho Araujo is the head of the eponymous architectural study. Through his work, the architect seeks to minimize his environmental footprint while creating beauty with the existing. With a certain sense of poetry, he took this disused reservoir in the middle of the Portuguese woods (his native country) and transformed it into a sublime contemporary house. The concrete component of this monolith extends from the exterior to the interior with a true Brutalist aesthetic. The pure lines extend to the furniture as well as the layout of the kitchen and bathrooms. The construction is half-submerged into the hillside, and its lowest level houses an elegant black kitchen that opens into the dining room. Meanwhile, a living room with floor-to-ceiling glass floats in the skylights above. In the bedrooms, finally, intimacy is made possible with the use of curtains. Soft and peaceful, and in total communion with nature, this modern house is the perfect illustration of the resilient architecture of tomorrow.
