Bugatti x Diatto 8C: Stranger by the Track

Founded in 1905 by brothers Pietro and Vittorio Diatto, Italian car manufacturer Diatto specialised in sports and luxury cars. Ten years after its creation, the brand was thriving. In 1915, Diatto began a technical and commercial collaboration with Ettore Bugatti, who had founded his own company in 1910, to manufacture the Diatto-Bugatti 8-cylinder aircraft engine. At the end of the First World War, Diatto Bugatti cars made a name for themselves on the racetrack thanks to their bold aerodynamic design, of which this version is a perfect example. With its extended rear end, it was said to reduce aerodynamic drag and turbulence. In any case, when Diatto withdrew from motor racing, the brand had established a record of more than 300 victories, with drivers such as Nuvolari and the Maserati brothers. Diatto cars competed in numerous Grand Prix races during the 1920s (European, Barcelona, Swedish, Swiss and Italian Grand Prix), as well as the Tunis-Tripoli race. Auctioned by Bonhams at the traditional Carmel sale on August 15th, this emblematic car should attract the attention of a few knowledgeable collectors.
