Listen to this story. On August 2nd, 1928, the Place Vendôme was buzzing with the arrival of Bhupinder Singh. The Maharajah of the state of Patiala came to Paris accompanied by his forty servants. Thirty-five suites had been reserved at the Ritz Hotel to accommodate them. The Maharajah was a very tall man – almost two meters tall – known for his immoderate taste for jewels. Yet no one knew which jeweler he would choose to go visit. On this summer day, escorted by Sikh guards carrying six iron boxes, Bhupinder Singh crossed the Place Vendôme and pushed the door of Boucheron. He was greeted by Louis, Frédéric Boucheron’s son, who accepted the six iron boxes filled with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and pearls. For these jewels, Louis Boucheron imagined 149 original designs. Reinterpreting this incredible commission, Claire Choisne, the House’s current artistic director, has designed an exceptional collection composed of pieces that can almost all be broken down and recomposed to create new modular pieces.
