RM Sotheby’s is currently auctioning a rather special car. The Virage was supposed to mark Aston Martin’s revival in 1990. After Ford bought Aston Martin and Jaguar shortly before the launch of the Virage, the car became the new owner’s first model. Keen to save money, the Virage borrowed a number of parts from mass-produced models: the headlights and rear lights respectively came from the Audi 200 and Volkswagen Scirocco, while General Motors, Jaguar and Ford supplied the steering column, dashboard and switches. The rear-view mirrors were borrowed from the Citroën CX.The result is a baroque style that is both lavish, with its omnipresent leather, wood and thick carpets, and yet somewhat cheap. Rarely available in manual transmission, with just over 300 hp, this convertible remains one of the most iconic models of this crucial period. With its incomparable charm and captivating sound, this noble car deserves our attention before its price reaches new heights.
