Tahar Rahim is a French actor of Algerian descent who has risen to international prominence in recent years. Born in Belfort, France in 1981, Rahim initially pursued studies in sports and computer science before discovering his passion for cinema. He went on to study film at the University of Montpellier, during which time he appeared in the docufiction Tahar the Student in 2005. His breakthrough role came early in his career thanks to The Prophet (2009), Jacques Audiard’s acclaimed film. His powerful performance as a young criminal who rises through the ranks of the prison hierarchy earned him the César Awards for Most Promising Actor and Best Actor, making him the first actor to win both awards for the same role. He went on to appear in films such as The Eagle (2011), The Past (2013), Samba (2014), and The Mauritanian (2021), for which he received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. He has also starred in several high-profile television series, including The Looming Tower (2018) and The Serpent (2021), the latter of which earned him another Golden Globe nomination. Tahar Rahim has become known for his collaborations with prestigious directors and his ability to transform himself for each new role. Whether playing a revolutionary in Napoleon (2023) or the legendary singer Charles Aznavour in 2024, his talent and versatility have solidified his reputation as one of the most compelling actors of his generation.
