ROSALÍA

#music

Known mononymously as ROSALÍA, Spanish singer and composer Rosalía Vila Tobella is one of the most influential musicians of our time, internationally praised for her innovative and experimental take on Flamenco. Born in 1992 in the outskirts of Barcelona, in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Rosalía discovered her penchant for music through Camarón de la Isla, one of the all-time greatest flamenco singers. Fascinated by this strongly traditional and deep-rooted genre, she started her music training all while performing at weddings and bars. Despite failing to impress judges at a talent show aged 15, and having to undergo vocal cord surgery, Rosalía didn’t give up and kept practising to improve and protect her voice. She enrolled at the prestigious Barcelona school, L’escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, where she had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be tutored personally by the renowned ‘cantaor’ El Chiqui de la Línea. Released in 2019, the album El mal querer – which she started recording in early 2017 as her baccalaureate project – was an absolute sensation. Not only musically but also conceptually, El mal querer embodies the blend of traditional and mainstream tropes that form the core of Rosalías’ signature style, which has come to represent contemporary flamenco. Since then, her popularity has only gotten stronger, with every new album and single gaining her numerous accolades and international recognition. In 2019, she starred in Pedro Almodovar’s Dolor y Gloria, sharing the screen with fellow Spanish stars Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz. Featured in top magazines and often spotted on the most coveted catwalks, Rosalía is also a fashion icon and, since May 2024, the new global ambassador for Dior and the face of the Lady Dior campaign.
