Marie Maertens is an independent art critic, journalist, and curator. One of her early notable works as a curator was “WANI” at the Fondation Ricard in 2011, followed by many other successful exhibitions such as “Desdemone, between desire and despair” at the Arab World Institute in 2015, and “The Fourth Sex” in 2017. One of her exhibitions, “The Surface of the East Coast,” was first presented in Nice before expanding to five galleries in Manhattan. Holding a background in art history, she is the author of Collect Video and Digital Art, published in 2015 by Presses du Réel, and a regular contributor to art publications such as Connaissance des Arts and Projets Media, where she writes critical texts and conducts interviews with artists, gallerists, and other art world figures. In 2023, she took on the role of artistic director of the Bordeaux fair BAD+ (Bordeaux + Art + Design). Throughout her career, Marie Maertens has demonstrated an interdisciplinary approach, blending her expertise in art history, journalism, and curatorial practice to explore contemporary art and its evolving relationship with the wider cultural landscape. She is very involved in the contemporary art scene and is regularly seen at events such as Les Rencontres d’Arles and awards ceremonies like the Jean-François Prat Prize or the Fondation Pernod Ricard Prize.
