Jean Charles de Castelbajac is a French fashion designer and art collector, born in Casablanca, Morocco, who is part of the visionary generation of designers that includes Thierry Mugler and Jean-Paul Gaultier. In the 1980s, he launched his eponymous brand and immediately imposed his colourful, anti-conformist style. His work is filled with recycling and references to childhood or art and is often characterised by a vibrant and playful atmosphere. Throughout his career, he has dressed and collaborated with numerous artists, in a constant effort to bring together his two loves: art and fashion. Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is both Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, both very high French distinctions. The 2010s marked the designer’s return to the fashion scene, as he took on the role of artistic director for brands like Le Coq Sportif and Benetton. In 2022, he was invited by the Centre Pompidou to create an interactive exhibition-workshop, “Le Peuple de Demain,” to introduce children to his artistic universe. Among his latest projects, his famous Angel character now permanently decorates the blind wall of the Société de Géographie building. Constantly pushing boundaries and blurring the lines between disciplines, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac has established himself as a true visionary in the world of art and fashion.
