As the son of Michel Audiard, the renowned French filmmaker and dialogue writer, one could say that cinema runs in Jacques Audiard’s blood. He began working as an assistant editor on films such as Roman Polanski’s The Tenant (1976) and Patrice Chéreau’s Judith Therpauve (1978), before transitioning into screenwriting in the early 1980s. He penned the scripts for several notable films, including The Professional (1981), Deadly Circuit (1983), and Baxter (1989). The road movie See How They Fall (1994) was a successful directorial debut since it earned him the César Award for Best First Film and the Georges Sadoul Prize. Two years later, A Self-Made Hero (1996) won the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival. Over the following years, Audiard established himself as a leading voice in French cinema, consistently creating films that combined genre elements with a distinctive auteur style. His work is characterised by sophisticated narratives, intriguing and ambiguous characters, and a penchant for stylized, violent aesthetics. Major critical and commercial successes include Read My Lips (2001), The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005), and the Palme d’Or-winning Dheepan (2015). Audiard has been recognized with numerous accolades, and his films have also gained international acclaim, receiving BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations.
