François Bellabas is a French artist working between Paris and Los Angeles. He graduated from ESAL in 2012 and ENSP in 2015, respectively an art school and a photography school, and founded the artist duo and creative studio Gourau Phong with Benjamin Roulet in 2017. His work was presented at various art events in France and Belgium, and he was nominated for the 2018 Schuman Prize for contemporary art. Technophile and engineer at heart, Bellabas likes to play with the different levels of reality produced by and stemming from the photographic medium, and questions the image as data. At the beginning of July 2024, Bellabas was awarded the Discovery Prize – Louis Roederer Foundation at the Rencontres d’Arles for his immersive installation “An Electronic Legacy”. It retraces the genealogy of artificial intelligence through different generations of tools, highlighting the image as data and the blurred boundaries between real and virtual spaces.
