Yuko Mohri at Pirelli HangarBicocca: Tangles, Sounds, and Ephemeral Sculptures

Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan

When art decides to stop obeying the laws of gravity and predictability, Entanglements is born. At the opening of Yuko Mohri’s solo exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca, curated by Fiammetta Griccioli and Vicente Todolí, the audience found themselves immersed in a concert of invisible forces and sonic tangles that transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Born in Kanagawa in 1980 but based in Tokyo, Mohri doesn’t create artworks—she orchestrates ephemeral ecosystems. Cables, modified musical instruments, urban debris, and everyday objects become kinetic sculptures that breathe with the air, vibrate with magnetism, and react to humidity. Duchamp, had he visited Milan that night, would have smiled.

The exhibition—the largest ever dedicated to the artist in Europe—is an invitation to lose oneself within interconnected systems where nothing acts alone: every suspended speck of dust, every shift in temperature becomes a voice in a fragile yet unstoppable chorus. A subtle irony runs through these assemblies, as if Mohri wants to remind us that reality is already absurd enough without exaggeration.

And while Stefano Boeri, Annie Ratti, Giorgio e Anna Fasol, Hicham Berrada, Nicola Ricciardi, Lorenzo Giusti, Milovan Farronato and the Deputy Consul General of Japan Nabeshima Tokuko moved among the installations and soundscapes, the Pirelli HangarBicocca courtyard seemed to transform into a giant collective tuning fork. In the end, Entanglements is not just an exhibition: it’s proof that we all live in the same chaotic orchestra, and the score is written by invisible forces.
