Yohji Yamamoto’s Poetic and Powerful Collection Shakes Up Paris Fashion Week

Les Halles, Paris

Printed on some of the garments on the catwalk, the words “Long Hot Summer” echoed throughout Yohji Yamamoto’s Parisian headquarters. Directly addressing the pressing issues of today, this and other messages were at the core of the Spring-Summer collection by the Japanese fashion designer. Also noteworthy were jewels by Rie Haruhi, adorning parts of the body that Yohji Yamamoto has traditionally kept well covered, opening up new perspectives regarding both silhouettes and attitudes. The main message, however, came later, with a spectacular series of stained-glass prints, fine stripes and flower-like stains, used on silk blouses in shades of eggplant and turquoise, as well as noble frock coats and endless kimonos.Everything is deconstructed, turned upside down, shaking up any convention. Paired with ankle-length silk pants, studio blouses used as painting canvases or loose knits, everything seems to levitate. All worn with a large series of centurion sandals or carelessly folded boxing boots. With sweeping breadth, Yamamoto’s oblique elegance continues to speak volumes without spelling anything out. Among those in attendance were Joe Starr, Bach Buquen, JID, Davido, Guram Gvasalia, Adriel Favela, and Estibaliz Badiola.
