Xie Lei Receives the Prix Marcel Duchamp at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris

Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris

A first in the history of the award: for its 2025 edition, the Prix Marcel Duchamp is being presented at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris (MAM), due to the renovation works at the Centre Pompidou, expected to be completed in 2030. Curated by Julia Garimorth and Jean-Pierre Criqui, this year’s exhibition brings together works by the four shortlisted artists: Bianca Bondi, Eva Nielsen, Lionel Sabatté and Xie Lei.

Established by ADIAF (the Association for the International Diffusion of French Art), the prize is endowed with 90,000€, including a 35,000€ grant awarded to the winner. This year, the prize has been awarded to Chinese artist Xie Lei, who has lived and worked in France for the past twenty years. His misty, enigmatic and compelling silhouettes won over the jury, making him the first painter to receive the award in two decades and restoring the medium to the centre of contemporary artistic debate. At the award ceremony, we met Xie Lei, alongside fellow nominees Bianca Bondi, Eva Nielsen and Lionel Sabatté, as well as Mathieu Mercier, Julian Charrière, Armand Jalut, Paula Aisemberg, Matthieu Poirier and many others.
