“Unheimlichkeit” by Edgar Jayet

“Unheimlichkeit” (similar to eeriness in English) is a concept invented by Freud, referring to the impression of strangeness that sometimes arises when faced with a familiar object or place. Chosen as part of Mobilier National’s fourth acquisition campaign, designer Edgar Jayet believes that furniture has some kind of subconscious – which is why he named his latest series in honor of the founder of psychoanalysis. Simple lines, a pearwood frame and a stretched cotton fabric created by textile designer Chiarastella Cattana: the 26-year-old designer’s refined style has impressed the institution that furnishes France’s highest authorities, as they have now acquired two of his chairs to its prestigious collection. Since 2020, Mobilier National – created by Louis XIV to manage the furnishing of royal residences – has supported contemporary creation through an annual acquisition program. The 2024 edition included pieces by around forty designers. During an era where 3d printing is a popular medium, Edgar Jayet, also an interior designer, stands out for his love of traditional skills such as trimmings and cabinet-making, which he incorporates into his creations. The result is an entire line of products, from pedestal tables to chaise longues, which make us forget this sensation of eeriness in favor of an appealing intimacy.

During the presentation at the 14 rue Saint-Guillaume, we met Edgar Jayet, Christian Lacroix, Race Imboden and many others.
