Tribute to Yoo Youngkuk at Palazzo Querini Stampalia
The first solo show devoted to Yoo Youngkuk in Europe, A Journey to the Infinite is an unprecedented opportunity to discover the work of this pioneer of Korean abstract art. Curated by Inhye Kim, the exhibition delves into a pivotal phase of the artist’s approach, that between 1960 and 1970. Through some thirty paintings, drawings and archival documents, the exhibition illustrates Yoo Youngkuk’s shift away from organic forms towards a more geometric style. This experimental period led him to pursue pure abstraction in a subtle colour palette, resulting in the distinctive style that made Yoo Youngkuk’s name. This is one of the highlights of the Biennale’s “collateral events” programme, stretching along three floors of the Palazzo Querini Stampalia, a Venetian cultural institution founded in 1869.
This emblematic figure of Korean avant-garde is one of the eight artists represented by Pace Gallery at this 60th edition of the international art fair. The gallery, founded by Arne Glimcher in 1960, presents works by Peter Hujar, Robert Indiana, Beatriz Milhazes, Acaye Kerunen, Sonia Gomes, Lee Ufan and Willem de Kooning, thus showcasing both emerging and established artists.
