The Palme d’Or Goes to Jafar Panahi’s Just An Accident

Palais du festival, Cannes

Everything comes to an end. After two weeks of outstanding cinema and exclusive parties on the Croisette, the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival came to a fitting end on Saturday evening at La Terrasse by Albane, where the winners gathered to celebrate their success.

The night’s biggest honour went to Jafar Panahi, who returned to Cannes 22 years after his last appearance to accept the coveted Palme d’Or for his film Just An Accident. Inspired by the Iranian director’s imprisonment and travel restrictions, which have kept him from attending the festival in past years despite his films being screened, this gripping thriller follows five characters entangled in a series of events, illustrating the complexities of Iranian society with a dash of humour.

Congratulations are also in order for Joachim Trier, who won the Grand Prix for Sentimental Value, Kleber Mendonça Filho, who received the Best Director award for The Secret Agent, Wagner Moura, Best Actor for his performance in The Secret Agent and Nadia Melliti, Best Actress for her role in Little Sister. Last but not least, Bi Gan received a special mention for “Resurrection”, a remarkable film full of cinematic magic that puts the name of the Chinese filmmaker among the greatest

Walking up the red carpet before the closing ceremony, we caught a glimpse of Halle Berry, Jane Fonda, Camélia Jordana, Cate Blanchett and Elle Fanning.
