The MAM Unveils its New Exhibition Programme

MAM, Paris

To mark the opening of Art Paris, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris unveiled its spring programme last Wednesday, April 2nd. Through four new exhibitions and a series of immersive experiences and workshops, the museum invites us to take an in-depth look at the work of Henri Matisse, Gabriele Münter, Oliver Beer, and Philippe Perrot.

With “Matisse and Marguerite – Through Her Father’s Eyes”, the MAM offers an unprecedented survey of the Fauvist pioneer through the painter’s relationship with his eldest daughter. Featuring over 110 works, some of which had never been exhibited before, the exhibition traces back chronologically their bond, revealing the influence of their relationship in the development of the artist’s style. Meanwhile, on the 6th floor, visitors can discover ‘Danse Danse – Matisse’, a virtual reality experience designed by Agnès Molia and Gordon that explores and pays tribute to the role dance played in the artist’s career.

In line with its commitment to promoting the visibility of women artists, the MAM is devoting a special place this season to Gabriele Münter. A pioneer of modern art, the German painter made her Paris debut at the Salon des Indépendants in 1907, before becoming one of the most emblematic figures of German Expressionism and co-founder of the Blaue Reiter. Entitled ‘Gabriele Münter – Painting without detours’, this retrospective illustrates the richness of her work through a selection of 150 works.

Meanwhile, Oliver Beer is unveiling the second instalment of his ‘A Thousand and One Voices’ project. After a first chapter devoted to compiling drawings and sound pieces, the artist is now screening four films featuring the drawings produced by more than 3,000 children as part of this initiative by the MAM, working with music as the common thread. At the end of the exhibition, running from April 4th to July 13th, the works will enter the museum’s permanent collection.

To round off the programme, chief curator Julia Garimoth and Adélaïde Lacotte invite us to discover Philippe Perrot’s work. With this exhibition, the MAM gives an unprecedented spotlight on the work of this cinephile and self-taught painter, whose dream-like universe explores a variety of themes ranging from spirituality to complex family relationships.

During the inaugural evening, we had the pleasure of meeting British artist Oliver Beer, alongside curators Julia Garimorth and Isabelle Monod-Fontaine, as well as Chris Dercon, Nina Childress, Fabrice Hergott, and many more.
