The Centre Pompidou Presents “Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Pontus Hulten” at the Grand Palais
A few months ahead of its closure for renovation, the Centre Pompidou is activating its off-site programming to showcase its collection in other venues. These temporary homes include the Grand Palais, which is hosting a major retrospective that marks the first installment of a collaboration between the Centre Pompidou and the GrandPalaisRmn. The exhibition “Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Pontus Hulten” explores the relationship of the emblematic artist couple through the eyes of their great friend Pontus Hulten, a lesser known yet major figure in the art world. Besides being a close friend of Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguy, with whom he shared an artistic vision and whose career he helped develop, the Swedish art curator is also intimately linked to the history of the Centre Pompidou, which he lead as its very first director between 1977 and 1981. Curated by Sophie Duplaix assisted by associate curator Rita Cusimano, the exhibition explores in depth the synergies between these three pioneers through a selection of exceptional works, gathered thanks to the participation of the Niki Charitable Art Foundation.
At the exhibition opening, which took place last Thursday evening, we had the opportunity of meeting curator Sophie Duplaix, alongside the grand-daughter of the artist Niki de Saint Phalle, Bloum Cardenas, as well as Charlotte Rampling, Apolonia Sokol, Rima Abdul Malak, Chris Dercon, and Christian Berst.
