The Bastian Gallery Presents Elfie Semotan’s First Solo Show in Paris

Galerie Bastian, Paris

Elfie Semotan is one of the most famous fashion photographers in the world, with her work showing that the boundaries between art and fashion photography are obsolete. After a few years as a model in Paris, Semotan took to the camera in the late 1960s and embarked on an international career as a photographer, travelling between New York, Vienna and the French capital. Creating unforgettable advertising campaigns, especially for the Palmers and Römerquelle brands, Semotan introduced a unique, feminine and modern aesthetic.

Photographing celebrities and film stars such as Louise Bourgeois, Maria Lassnig, Ben Stiller and Willem Dafoe, she quickly established herself as an outstanding portraitist. Published in magazines like Vogue, Elle, Esquire, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar and The New Yorker, her work is considered exceptionally sharp, focusing on the models and their unique characteristics.

Curated by Sebastian C. Strenger, her incredible work is presented at the Bastian gallery during an exceptional solo exhibition entitled ‘New Préraphaélisme’. Say Who had the privilege of interviewing the artist before attending the opening, where we met Melvil Poupaud, Santiago Rumney-Guggenheim, Michael Timsit, Philippe Régnier, Hester Middelweerd and many others.
