Synthetic Jungle: Frédéric Malle and Anne Flipo unveil their vision of nature
If nature remains a constant source of inspiration for artists, few of them take it upon themselves to try to recreate and reinvent it through synthetic materials. This is the case of Frédéric Malle, who has always been fascinated with the paradox that exists between the desire to represent authentic nature and the possibilities offered by synthetic molecules in the art of perfumery. From this paradox comes Synthetic Jungle, the newest addition to the Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle family. For this new project, Frédéric Malle called on Anne Flipo, a key figure in today’s perfumery landscape close to Dominique Ropion, whose collaboration with Frédéric Malle is well known. Synthetic Jungle also marks Anne Flipo’s entry into Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. For this first collaboration, she chose a lush and fantasized nature, following Frédéric Malle’s own inspirations, which include Le Douanier Rousseau, “Avatar”, or Stevie Wonder. To best embody the universe of the perfume, Frédéric Malle called on artist Neil Beloufa – who was nominated for the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2015 and is known for his work centered around video installation -during an event produces by Say Who. The result: an immersive work presented to the press and friends of the house this week in Paris. Coming into the work, visitors were invited to immerse themselves unto the perfume’s main notes with a play on scent and images.
