“Into the Trees”: Setsuko exhibits at Gagosian Gallery

“Into the Trees” at Gagosian Gallery’s Paris rue de Ponthieu space features the work of Japanese artist Setsuko, who lives between Paris and Switzerland. “Nature is my master” the artist states; it is the quote that welcomes the visitors. The exhibition presents a series of glazed terracotta ceramics, plus sculptures and paintings, which showcase the artist’s sensitivity, finesse and attention to detail. (New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has purchased the artist’s work for their collections.) Produced at Atelier Astier de Villatte in Paris, the works attest to the artist’s relationship with the natural world: trunks and branches worked in milky white enamel or pieces left in their natural earthen brown. For the exhibition opening, Setsuko’s work drew in Inès de la Fressange, artist Taryn Simon, Diana Picasso, Benoît Astier de Villatte and chef Daniel de la Falaise. The exhibition is on view until June 1st.
