Sam Abell captures Cindy Crawford for Acne Studios
Acne Studios holds a special place in the Paris fashion landscape. Far from “fashion for fashion”, their collections and campaigns authentically reflect the cultural and artistic references of creative director and co-founder Jonny Johansson. This week, the brand took the opposite approach from the shows by presenting their new campaign in the form of an exhibition at Galerie Edouard Escougnou. The brand has always been so clever in bringing together the creative minds that were/are influential on their generation. Judging by this campaign’s casting, this is an understatement: Acne Studio asked American photographer Sam Abell, a leading figure in landscape photography and National Geographic’s long-lasting collaborator since the 1960s, to capture top model Cindy Crawford, one of the original “supers”. The name given to the campaign, “Iconic”, is only natural as the two icons have had a large, global influence for decades. The campaign is iconic even as far as the landscape is concerned: the city of Amarillo (Texas) where Ant Farm had a series of cadillac buried in 1974, since named Cadillac Ranch. A place that has become a monument over the years.
