Robert de Niro Kicks Off the 78th Cannes Film Festival

Palais des Festivals, Cannes

His iconic mirror scene in Taxi Driver was improvisation at its best, yet Robert de Niro’s presence at this year’s Cannes Film Festival follows a fairly set schedule. The 78th edition of the festival devoted to the seventh art will see the American actor receive the honorary Palme d’Or for his body of work. This prestigious award will be bestowed on him this evening by Leonardo DiCaprio himself, a dear colleague with whom he has collaborated no fewer than six times in films such as This Boy’s Life (1993) and Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon (2023).

On Tuesday, May 13th, before the big event at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, we met him alongside Juliette Binoche, president of the jury for this 78th edition, and jurors Halle Berry, Payal Kapadia, Alba Rohrwacher, Carlos Reygadas, Jeremy Strong, Dieudo Hamadi, Leïla Slimani and Hong Sangsoo. An exciting first gathering before the ceremony and the exceptional masterclass he will be hosting for festival-goers on May 14th.
