Mario Martone Presents a Biopic on Goliarda Sapienza, A Renowned Italian Writer
Mario Martone comes back to Cannes for the third time to present his latest feature film “Fuori”. After a first experience in biopics with “Leopardi : Il giovane favoloso”, the Italian director chose to depict a part of the life of woman of letters Goliarda Sapienza. An anti-fascist and feminist activist, the writer is rather unknown in France, as is her most notable work, “The Art of Joy”, which she never succeeded in publishing during her lifetime. The film mainly focuses on her experience in prison after stealing jewellery, her romantic relationship with a young fellow inmate, and the friendships she pursues after her release. Set in 1980s Rome, Mario Martone’s film is subtle and nostalgic, but as memorable as the work of this forgotten figure. On the red carpet, we met Valeria Golino, Corrado Fortuna, Mario Martone, Naomi Campbell, Elodie Di Patrizi and many others.
