Harry Nuriev’s Experimental Denim at Carpenters Workshop Gallery

Last Saturday we attended the opening of “Harry Nuriev: Denim” at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, the first solo exhibition of the eponymous artist in collaboration with Aurélie Julien Collectible. Conceived as a celebration of denim, the exhibition epitomizes the growing intersection between art, fashion and design that we are witnessing these days. The timing of the inauguration was perfect, as this new facet of Nuriev’s creative endeavour was unveiled in the midst of a Paris Fashion Week in full swing. Best known for founding Crosby Studio in 2014, the artist has always envisioned his practice through the lens of “Transformism”, a notion rooted in the reinterpretation of everyday objects. “Harry Nuriev: Denim” is thus a collection of hybrid pieces. Conceived as assemblages of dissociable elements, the works are “dressed” in denim fabric and embody a design aimed at creating pieces that focus on humans and their needs. During the opening cocktail dinner, guests were able to discover Nuriev’s microenvironments and works like the Sofa Pool, a crossbred piece conceived as a multipurpose space. Somewhere between a table and a sofa, Nuriev’s furniture aims to connect people, and puts forward a new use for denim, a textile that has become an integral part of global pop culture.
