The Centre Pompidou-Metz Presents the Exhibition “Copyists”
In an age when originality is a hotly debated topic, we tend to forget that copying is not just plagiarism, but also an ancestral training method. Over the centuries, apprentices have reproduced the works of their teachers, engaging in an exercise that requires great precision, trains the copyist’s eye and enables them to grasp the complexity of the original technique. To honour this tradition, the Centre Pompidou Metz is presenting a new exhibition organised in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, from June 14th to February 2nd. Curated by Donatien Grau and Chiara Parisi, ‘Copyists’ brings together the work of 100 contemporary artists, who have been invited to make a copy of a work from the Louvre’s collections, creating an intergenerational dialogue that spans centuries of history.
At the exhibition’s opening on Friday, June 13th, many leading figures from the art world came to discover these unique copies. After a tour of the exhibition, guests gathered on the terrace for a dinner prepared by Michelin-starred chef Charles Coulombeau, who also signed a book dedicated to Jeff Koons. The evening ended with a karaoke session, featuring artists such as George Rouy, Jeff Koons, Nina Childress, Pol Taburet and many others.
